I bought a (cheap) dulcimer last spring because I wanted to learn play. Well, I have since found that it does not have a 61/2 fret and the first fret is misplaced causing many of the notes played to be flat. I guess that is what I get for buying someting on my own and trying to teach myself. Your site is wonderful and I have learned a great deal jsut by reading. Thank you.

Thanks for all the detail on dulcimer construction. I'm planning to build a dulcimer and considering chromatic or at least 1-1/2 and 8-1/2. I like shellac. My Warren May dulcimer is curly maple and very nice sounding.

I hope someday, to have a wonderful dulcimer that you have crafted. I own a McSpadden dulcimer right now.

I met Walt Martin back in the 1970s when he and his wife would host several of us for some "pickin' and grinnin'". Lot's to say, not enough space. A friend, Jeff Cooper, was one of those folks who could play anything that had a string or two on it and he was equally adept at playing the dulcimer. Those were good evenings.
