Materials

We search for the very best materials for Bear Meadow Appalachian Dulcimers. The fact is that materials are a small part of the cost of the instrument, so it would be unwise to skimp here. And starting with the good stuff is an influence in the right direction.

Our basic materials are:

  • Wood Currently we are using Granadillo (sometime known as Mexican Cocobolo)
  • Glue. Cyano-acrylic, CA, or "crazy" glue
  • Finishes. Tung Oil Varnish, Shellac, Wax
  • bead cord. Griffin's Polyamid #8
  • Tassel cord. M&J, NYC
  • Tassels. M&J, NYC
  • Brass fittings. From brass rod and wire
  • Jade rings. These are 1" and 1/2" jade "donut" rings. Available at Chinese markets or on the internet.
  • Horsehair. Currently we are using violin bow hair.
  • Silk. Currently we are using a gold/red silk. We are hoping to find a larger stock of this to replace it as the supply dwindles.
