Materials


We search for the very best materials for Bear Meadow Appalachian Dulcimers. The fact is that materials are a small part of the cost of the instrument, so it would be unwise to skimp here. And starting with the good stuff is an influence in the right direction.

Our basic materials are whatever is available. Currently we use:

  • Wood Chakto Cok and Padauk
  • Glue. Cyano-acrylic, CA, or "crazy" glue
  • Finishes. Shellac, Wax
  • bead cord. Griffin's Polyamid #8 and #14
  • Tassel cord. M&J, NYC; JoAnn Fabrics
  • Tassels. M&J, NYC
  • Brass fittings. From brass rod and wire
  • Jade rings. These are 1" and 1/2" jade "donut" rings. Available at Chinese markets, bead stores or on the internet.
  • Horsehair. Horse mane hair.
  • Silk. Gold-red silk.
